In its original form, cinnabar is crystallized red mercuric sulphide (HgS), the main ore bearing mercury. In modern times this form is no longer used due to its toxicity. Cinnabar powder has been used for thousands of years as a coloring agent because of its intense red-orange color- vermilion obtained naturally by grinding the ore into a fine powder .

Nowadays, Cinnabar jewelry does not contain any cinnabar ore for safety reasons, since mercury compounds shouldn't stay in contact with the skin. For many decades, traditional Taiwanese and Chinese artists refer to carved pieces/beads/jewelry made by this process as Cinnabar.
